Why Might Weekly Therapy Sessions Be Recommended?

There are several reasons as to why weekly sessions of therapy are recommended, especially in the beginning of a course of therapy. The psychotherapy research literature identifies the therapeutic relationship between patient and therapist as one of the key variables that influences the outcome and benefits of the therapy.

Weekly sessions, as opposed to something much less frequent, like monthly sessions, is able to better foster a consistent and reliable connection between the person in the therapy and their therapist. Furthermore, it is the consistency and reliability of this relationship that is important for the building of trust which can then allow the patient to explore deeper emotional material. Additionally, if the sessions are too far apart, patients are more likely to suppress and avoid difficult material, which is likely to limit the depth and effectiveness of the work.

Of course, for some people, there are various important and legitimate factors that might impact on their capacity to attend more frequent therapy sessions. These can include  considerations such as finances as well as responsibilities like work and family commitments. Ultimately, the ‘right’ frequency of sessions is something to be discussed with your therapist and be one that suits your circumstances.
